1. Hemostasis: Immediately after an injury, the body activates the hemostasis stage to stop bleeding through blood clotting. Platelets aggregate to form a clot that seals the wound, preventing further blood loss. 

2. Inflammation: Following hemostasis, the inflammatory phase begins. This stage is characterized by redness, heat, swelling, and pain at the wound site. White blood cells rush to the site to fight infection, clear out debris, and release growth factors that are critical for the healing process. 

3. Proliferation: This phase involves the rebuilding of dermal tissues and the development of new blood vessels. Cells known as fibroblasts play a crucial role by producing collagen, which forms a new network of tissue (granulation tissue). The wound contracts as this new tissue grows. 

4. Maturation: Also known as the remodeling stage, maturation can last for years. The collagen deposited in the proliferation stage is now remodeled and realigned along tension lines, and unnecessary cells are removed, which strengthens the tissue and reduces scar size. 


Factors Affecting Wound Healing  

Several factors can influence how effectively a wound heals: 

•    Older age can slow down the healing process due to weaker immune systems and reduced skin elasticity. 
•    Adequate nutrition, especially proteins, vitamins (A and C), and zinc, is crucial for effective healing. 
•    Diseases like diabetes and vascular disease can impede blood flow, affecting wound healing. 
•    Wounds that become infected heal more slowly and might lead to worse outcomes.
•    Smoking decreases blood flow and can significantly delay wound healing. 
•    Certain medications, such as corticosteroids and chemotherapy drugs, can impair wound healing.
