Nearby Computing Merged with Cellnex Telecom to Unveil 5G and Edge Computing Infrastructure for Smart Cities

28 Apr 2023

Nearby Computing

Nearby Computing collaborated with Cellnex Telecom utilizing Lenovo technology and has taken charge of the emergency response in smart cities aspect of the 5G Catalunya pilot project. By undertaking this task, Nearby Computing has confirmed the effectiveness of combining 5G networks and edge computing to enhance emergency response systems in smart cities.

This collaboration involves utilizing the robust Lenovo ThinkSystem SE350 edge servers, which bring network capabilities closer to users, resulting in enhanced performance and reduced expenses.

Here’s the Complete Story

In this project, the Stand Alone and Open Ran 5G networks were evaluated for a complex network of devices and applications. By leveraging the benefits of edge computing and the capabilities of this novel high-speed and real-time technology, it becomes feasible to:

•    Enhance emergency management in smart cities by anticipating critical scenarios and promptly addressing incidents.
•    Monitor traffic and trigger appropriate responses, such as activating traffic lights.
•    Ensure the safety of officers while they are on duty.

The essential aspect of this Catalunya pilot lies in the fact that 5G and edge computing enable access to multiple real-time data sources. This allows for expediting and streamlining decision-making in critical situations where time and access to all information are vital.

To create the solution, Cellnex chose to use Lenovo ThinkSystem SE350 edge servers and prototype Lenovo ThinkSystem SE650 servers as foundational components. The Lenovo servers are well-suited to support 5G, smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and other emerging use cases, offering a balance of performance and adaptability.

What is the emergency response in smart cities?

Emergency response in smart cities refers to the use of advanced technologies and data analytics to mitigate the impact of emergencies, such as natural disasters, accidents, or terrorist attacks, and to respond quickly and effectively to them.

Smart cities use various Internet of Things (IoT) devices, sensors, and connected systems to monitor the city's infrastructure, environment, and public safety in real time. These systems generate large amounts of data, which are analyzed using artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to detect potential threats and provide early warning signals.

In addition, the growth of the space-based edge computing market is being boosted by increased research and development efforts aimed at creating economic components for edge computing.

According to the BIS Research report, the global space-based edge computing market is estimated to reach $1.80 billion in 2033 from $200.9 million in 2022, at a CAGR of 22.64% during the forecast period 2023-2033.

In case of an emergency, smart cities use this data to facilitate communication, coordinate emergency services, and optimize response strategies to minimize loss of life and damage to property. For instance, emergency responders can use real-time traffic data to identify the fastest route to reach the emergency site or use drones equipped with cameras and sensors to assess the situation from a safe distance.

Conclusion

According to Arunkumar Sampathkumar, Principal Analyst, BIS Research, “The satellite-enabled networks catering to commercial and military customers operate under dynamic environments, which get contested and degraded in random fashion owing to a multitude of factors.”

Furthermore, the integration of advanced technologies into emergency response systems has the potential to transform the way cities handle emergencies, and this trend is expected to continue as smart city initiatives gain momentum globally.
