China Operates its First 10,000-Ton Green Hydrogen Demonstration Project

10 Aug 2023

Power supply equipment for water electrolysis encompasses the apparatus or setups that furnish electrical energy for the water electrolysis process. This equipment is accountable for supplying the essential electrical energy required to facilitate the electrolysis reaction.

LONGi Hydrogen, the foremost provider of extensive electrolyzers and solutions for green hydrogen production, secured the project contract in May 2022.

As per the BIS Research report, the power supply equipment market for water electrolysis was valued at $0.33 billion in 2022, and it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 33.27% and reach $5.71 billion by 2032.

In continuation of this project by LONGi, China started the operation of its first 10,000-ton green hydrogen refinery project.

Here’s the Complete Story

Sinopec, a Chinese company, announced the successful completion of the nation's initial 10,000-ton green hydrogen demonstration project in July 2023. This project effectively generates hydrogen, and the produced hydrogen was then transported through pipelines to local petroleum refining enterprises, where it replaced conventional natural gas as a power source.

This project achieved the complete cycle of green hydrogen production and utilization, signifying a significant milestone as it represents China's first fully integrated industrial chain of a 10,000-ton green hydrogen refining project.

With an annual production capacity of 20,000 metric tons of hydrogen, this project is noteworthy as China's pioneering 10,000-ton photovoltaic green hydrogen demonstration project. It serves as a compelling and scalable demonstration that can be replicated and promoted worldwide, showcasing the potential for green hydrogen industry development and photovoltaic-based hydrogen production.

Future Prospects of the Project

The green hydrogen generated by this project would be supplied to nearby local petroleum refining enterprises, completely replacing the use of natural gas and fossil energy in hydrogen production. This transition is expected to result in a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 485,000 tons annually.

The project not only establishes a new pathway for green hydrogen refining but also serves as a demonstration of the industrial application of green hydrogen, showcasing its potential for large-scale adoption by refining enterprises to achieve carbon emission reduction. Furthermore, it plays a vital role in promoting the transformation and advancement of the energy industry.

This project represents a significant milestone as the first comprehensive demonstration project in China that integrates the entire process of green hydrogen production and utilization.

It encompasses various stages such as photovoltaic power generation, green power hydrogen production, green power transmission, green hydrogen refining, and hydrogen storage, hydrogen transportation.

Conclusion
Supportive government initiatives, stringent net zero targets, and increasing demand for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, green ammonia, green methanol, and various other applications are anticipated to fuel the expansion of the power supply equipment market for water electrolysis.
