According to co-author Professor Hirakawa, "The mobility of this UAV means that it is possible to gather deep geodetic measurements much more swiftly and efficiently than before." "Such high-speed UAV observation in the sea would enable frequent marine biology and fisheries science observations, assist in the operation of autonomous underwater vehicles/remotely operated vehicles, and contribute to catastrophe prevention,” he further adds. 

The team's next steps involve more seagoing UAV testing and the advancement of autonomous navigation and observation capabilities. Given the destruction that earthquakes and tsunamis may bring, precise data that can aid in the forecast, such as that obtained by UAVs, is essential.
