Google Announces Mission to Track Methane Emissions from Space

22 Feb 2024

On 14th February, Google announced a collaboration with the nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) to utilize satellite technology in mapping methane pollution as well as oil and gas infrastructure. Together, Google and EDF aim to identify the sources of methane emissions with greater precision, potentially aiding in the mitigation of these leaks.

The Agreement

EDF is set to launch MethaneSAT in March 2024, a satellite designed to monitor and quantify methane emissions, a highly potent greenhouse gas. Simultaneously, Google is employing artificial intelligence (AI) in these satellites to map oil and gas infrastructure globally, contributing to the identification of pollution sources.

This collaboration between Google and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) aims to produce the most comprehensive assessment of methane emissions to date, potentially aiding in pinpointing problem areas and holding responsible parties accountable.

MethaneSAT, equipped with spectrometers and advanced software, will detect methane plumes emanating from oil and gas operations worldwide. Google and EDF will then utilize this data to create maps accessible to researchers, regulators, and the public, offering unprecedented insight into the extent and locations of methane leaks.

Despite the promise of this technology, experts caution that addressing leaks effectively will require more than just data collection. Identifying leaks is only the first step; ensuring action from companies and governments to address them poses a significant challenge.

The Future Impact

The swift reduction of methane pollution can significantly impact climate change, as methane is responsible for a considerable portion of global warming. Unlike carbon dioxide, which lingers in the atmosphere for centuries, methane has a shorter lifespan but is much more potent in the short term.

The collaboration's objective is to provide valuable information to energy companies, researchers, and government entities to anticipate and mitigate methane emissions. Amidst this Google-ENF initiative, the global biomethane market is witnessing substantial growth, driven by increasing demand for renewable energy and sustainable fuel sources.

Moreover, MethaneSAT will gather data globally, providing insights into methane levels and emission trends over time. The data collected by MethaneSAT will be publicly accessible through its website and Google Earth Engine, facilitating research and policymaking efforts aimed at mitigating methane emissions.
