
India is preparing for a major milestone in advanced computing as IBM plans to deploy the country’s first quantum computer in Amaravati by September 2026. The announcement was made by IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna, who said quantum computing is nearing an important “inflection point” and could begin showing strong commercial value within the next two to three years.
The quantum computer will be installed at the Amaravati Quantum Valley, a major technology initiative by the Andhra Pradesh government. The project aims to position Amaravati as a national hub for quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing, research, startups, and talent development.

IBM’s planned system is expected to include the IBM Quantum System Two, powered by a 156-qubit Heron processor. This is important because quantum computers work very differently from traditional computers. Instead of using regular bits, they use qubits, which can process highly complex calculations in ways classical systems cannot easily handle.
The arrival of IBM’s quantum system in India could support research and innovation across several industries.
