Samsung Launches Exynos Ultra-Wideband Chipset with Centimeter Level Accuracy

Samsung Electronics has recently unveiled its latest innovation in the ultra-wideband (UWB) technology space, namely, the Exynos Connect U100 chipset. As the popularity of UWB technology continues to grow, especially in location-based services such as access control and keyless entry into vehicles, Samsung's latest offering boasts a single-digit centimeter accuracy that is optimized for use in mobile, automotive, and IoT devices. According to the BIS Research market report, the global ultra-wideband technology-based vehicle access control market was valued at $92.6 million in 2022, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17.09% and reach $383.1 million by 2031.

The first ultra-wideband processor from Samsung Electronics, a leader in cutting-edge semiconductor technology, is the Exynos Connect U100. The new UWB solution is intended for use in mobile, automotive, and the Internet of Things (IoT) devices and provides precise distance and location data with single-digit centimeter precision.

Additionally, Samsung unveiled "Exynos Connect," a new brand that unifies its UWB, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi short-range wireless communication solutions. These solutions are essential for allowing a world that is increasingly hyperconnected.

Joonsuk Kim, Executive Vice President of the Connectivity Development Team at Samsung Electronics, stated that the Exynos Connect U100's sophisticated ranging and positioning capabilities are combined with high security to enable hyper-connectivity between people and commonplace objects, igniting a variety of new applications in positioning and location tracking. 

Fast data transfers are possible with UWB, a short-range wireless communication technology that uses a wide frequency spectrum and consumes little electricity. With its ability to capture incredibly accurate spatial and directional data, UWB is becoming more and more common in several industries, including automotive and those that deal with remote payments, smart keys, smart homes, and smart factories.

Samsung's Exynos Connect U100 offers the precision of single-digit centimeters and under five degrees by utilizing the time of arrival (ToA) and 3D angle of arrival (AoA) measurements. This makes it particularly helpful for apps like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) that require precise and real-time tracking of moving people, as well as for locating objects in difficult indoor environments without GPS.

The U100 is perfect for use in small devices because it combines radio frequency (RF), baseband, embedded Flash (eFlash) memory, and power control IP into a single chip.

The power-saving option of the U100 can increase the battery life of mobile and automotive solutions as well as IoT devices like smart tracking tags that run on low-power batteries. In addition to an STS function for dependable communication, the U100 has a secure hardware encryption engine to prevent outside hacking.

The FiRa Consortium, a nonprofit industry group that verifies UWB products for compliance with interoperability standards, has approved Samsung's Exynos Connect U100.

The U100 is also compliant with the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) Digital Key Release 3.0, a standard created to store, authenticate, and exchange digital keys for vehicles. As a result, smartphones with the U100 can safely share digital key information with vehicles.
