India to Witness its First Homedeveloped Quadruped Robot and Exoskeleton for Defense Sector

Svaya Robotics, located in Hyderabad, has partnered with two labs belonging to DRDO, namely, the Research and Development Establishment in Pune (R&DE) and the Defence Bioengineering & Electro Medical Laboratory in Bengaluru (DEBEL), in March 2023 to construct India's first quadruped robot and a wearable exoskeleton. 

These two robots, which have been developed to meet a variety of requirements in the industrial and defense sectors, are classified as dual-use robots. The company has invested significant effort in designing these robots to cater to a wide range of applications.

Hyderabad's Svaya Robotics has created India's first quadruped robot and exoskeleton for the defense industry as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. These robots are currently being imported from Switzerland and the U.S. to improve India's defense capabilities.

According to Vijay R. Seelam, founder and Managing Director of Svaya Robotics, “The four-legged robot designed by Svaya Robotics can traverse challenging landscapes, offering remote reconnaissance and inspection capabilities to the defense and security forces.

He further added, “The exoskeleton created by the company caters to the anthropometry of Indian soldiers and enhances their physical endurance by allowing them to cover long distances without experiencing fatigue. Furthermore, the exoskeleton can also facilitate the lifting of heavy loads with ease.” 

Need for Exoskeleton in Defense

The use of exoskeletons in defense can provide numerous benefits. Firstly, exoskeletons can significantly enhance the physical capabilities of soldiers by augmenting their strength and endurance.
