India to Witness its First Homedeveloped Quadruped Robot and Exoskeleton for Defense Sector

20 Apr 2023

Svaya Robotics, located in Hyderabad, has partnered with two labs belonging to DRDO, namely, the Research and Development Establishment in Pune (R&DE) and the Defence Bioengineering & Electro Medical Laboratory in Bengaluru (DEBEL), in March 2023 to construct India's first quadruped robot and a wearable exoskeleton.

These two robots, which have been developed to meet a variety of requirements in the industrial and defense sectors, are classified as dual-use robots. The company has invested significant effort in designing these robots to cater to a wide range of applications.

Hyderabad's Svaya Robotics has created India's first quadruped robot and exoskeleton for the defense industry as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. These robots are currently being imported from Switzerland and the U.S. to improve India's defense capabilities.

According to Vijay R. Seelam, founder and Managing Director of Svaya Robotics, “The four-legged robot designed by Svaya Robotics can traverse challenging landscapes, offering remote reconnaissance and inspection capabilities to the defense and security forces.

He further added, “The exoskeleton created by the company caters to the anthropometry of Indian soldiers and enhances their physical endurance by allowing them to cover long distances without experiencing fatigue. Furthermore, the exoskeleton can also facilitate the lifting of heavy loads with ease.”

Need for Exoskeleton in Defense

The use of exoskeletons in defense can provide numerous benefits. Firstly, exoskeletons can significantly enhance the physical capabilities of soldiers by augmenting their strength and endurance. This can help soldiers to carry heavy loads, traverse long distances, and operate for extended periods without experiencing fatigue.

Exoskeletons can also protect soldiers from physical injuries caused by carrying heavy loads or performing strenuous tasks. By distributing the weight of the load across the exoskeleton's frame, soldiers can avoid strain on their joints and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries.

Furthermore, exoskeletons can improve soldiers' agility and mobility, allowing them to navigate challenging terrains and overcome obstacles more easily. This can be particularly useful in combat situations where speed and flexibility can be critical to mission success.

As per the wearable robotic exoskeleton market report by BIS Research, there has been a significant surge in demand for wearable robotic exoskeletons in recent years. This is primarily attributed to the growing elderly population worldwide and increased awareness among end-users about the benefits of exoskeletons.

In response to this trend, numerous government agencies, non-profit organizations, and associations have begun to invest in the exoskeleton market, creating lucrative opportunities for new players to enter the market.

Will quadruped robots and exoskeletons strengthen India's defense sector?

The use of exoskeleton technology in the Indian defense sector has the potential to significantly enhance the capabilities of soldiers on the battlefield. By augmenting the physical strength and endurance of soldiers, exoskeletons can enable them to carry heavier loads, cover greater distances, and operate for extended periods without experiencing fatigue. This can translate into increased mobility, agility, and mission success rates.

Additionally, the use of indigenous exoskeleton technology can also improve India's self-reliance and reduce its dependence on imported equipment, thereby strengthening its defense sector.

Conclusion

The deployment of robotics is expected to have a significant impact on the Indian defense sector, as it can serve two crucial purposes. Firstly, robotics can enhance soldiers' capabilities by augmenting their physical strength and endurance, which can be crucial in challenging environments.

Secondly, robotics can provide remote reconnaissance capabilities, which can be extremely useful in gathering critical intelligence without risking soldiers' lives.
Overall, the use of robotics is expected to play a vital role in strengthening India's defense capabilities.
