ALTERNATIVES TO PERFLUOROALKYL AND POLYFLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCES (PFAS): SUSTAINABILITY IN CHEMICAL WORLD

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals known as "forever chemicals" due to their high resistance to degradation in natural environments, resulting in persistent and widespread contamination. Their chemical structure, which includes carbon-fluorine bonds among the strongest in organic chemistry, makes PFAS highly stable but challenging to break down. As a result, PFAS accumulate in water, soil, and living organisms, leading to potential health risks. The difficulty in removing PFAS from ecosystems, combined with their toxicological effects, has prompted regulatory and research efforts aimed at mitigating their environmental and health impacts.
